About the project

photo-giles-studio.jpgThis JISC-funded project will digitise the Carl Giles collection, the single most important archive of British newspaper cartoons, and a key resource for British political and social history that has never before been open to the public. The collection will become a major part of the existing University of Kent British Cartoon Archive, helping to create the largest archive of cartoons in the UK.

The entire collection of almost 17,000 cartoon images, with 5,000 images from the related correspondence and paperwork, will be made available. A new British Cartoon Archive website will be developed to replace the current website and searchable catalogue. This will significantly increase its accessibility and usability and bring the metadata of the entire collection in line with current international standards.

The project runs until March 2009.

Read about the Carl Giles archive on the new website.
