While the project to digitise the Carl Giles archive will be making the material available to a wide audience and will provide digital archival copies of many of the items in the collection, it is still important to take care of the physical objects and ensure that the required convervation activities are carried out.
Our digital camera will not only allow us to make 3D objects available in a digital format to users browsing the collection on the web but it can also be used to record the condition of material requiring conservation.
The British Cartoon Archive has been successful in getting a grant of £2,000 to help with the storage of the Carl Giles collection. The money, from the MLA SE Museum Development Fund (MDF), will be used for buying archive boxes, envelopes and sleeves to store correspondence and photos currently housed in filing cabinets and non-archival boxes.
Further details of successful MDF applications are on the MLA SE website.
